On 8 and 9 September the Tenth European Bat Night and the corresponding Second Catalan Bat Night in Catalonia were held.
Unlike previous years, the same activities were organised in two different places, on 8 September in Granollers (Barcelona) and 9 September in Sadernes (Girona). Despite having staged more or less the same activities the year before, over 100 people turned up and participated in the activities at Granollers, while Sadernes welcomed around 40 people, a remarkably large number of people for such a small village. In both cases, the majority of participants were families with small children, although there were other people from different age groups who had travelled to find out a bit more about these intriguing flying mammals.
Overall, the Second Catalan Bat Night was a great success and allows us to look forward confidently to many more such nights in the future. Given the variety of activities planned, in 2006 many more families with children turned up than expected and the organisers hope to continue to welcome as many young visitors in the future. The press also played its part and helped to get across to an even wider public the fascination of this group of animals.
Finally, the organisers would like to thank all those who collaborated or attended the Second Catalan Bat Night and we look forward to meeting up again next year!
During the event the following activities were staged between 18.00 and 23.00:t:
1. Children’s show and story-telling: ‘The adventures of Rat’ by Ada Cusidó. This dramatised narration introduces the most remarkable characteristics of bats to a younger audience.
